Creating Peace on the Homefront

Your home should be your sanctuary, that tranquil expression of your inner harmony and strength. It should help insulate and protect you from the hectic chaos in the outside world. Creating your personal centering safe zone does require a little effort to develop but can be much easier than you might at first think. Here are a few ways to encourage a peaceful environment in your home.

Your external environment can both reflect and influence your inner well being. A cluttered and disorganized physical surrounding does make it more difficult to find a harmonious mental state. Having to constantly look for misplaced items builds up a low-grade negative energy charge that can build into a long-term disruption in your ability to concentrate. Dedicating a few days to giving your living space a full cleanup and de-clutter can give a noticeable boost in positive energy to use for harmonizing your home space.

Music has been shown to have a very strong effect on the human body and psyche. In the same manner as incense sooths the air and creates mood, a soft non-intrusive musical beat in the background brings the body and heart rate back into a more rhythmic pattern. A calming musical soundtrack for our daily lives can enhance the harmony we are able to develop as we recreate our home as a calming center.

Remember that harmony comes with balance, so there should be both active and passive times spent in the home to harmonize the energy flow you can access within it. A prime example is to take some quiet time when coming home from work. Make it a habit to take five or ten minutes of quiet to unwind and release the day’s stress. Train yourself to leave work at work. This unwind time is to help make a clear separation between the two aspects of your daily life.

If you share your home with friends or family, make sure to be mindful and courteous to them and the stresses they deal with. By making it easier for others to unwind and relax, we are making a more harmonious atmosphere for our own selves to enjoy. An important tool to use in making a harmonious living space for multiple persons is positive reinforcement. Never allow yourself to take those around you for granted. Notice and praise the things they do to help create the mutual atmosphere of stress-free home life.

If a conflict or confrontation does occur, as is usually inevitable even between the most well balanced people, catch yourself and step back for a minute to cool off. Meditate for a bit on the details of the disagreement. Often you can find that, once high emotions are tempered, the solution to a problem will occur. If nothing else, it helps you to re-enter the discussion with a calmer mood so a harmonious conclusion is more likely to be worked out.

The peacefulness of your home should be of paramount importance as it can directly impact the physical health and mental well being of you and your family. If you can succeed at creating a safe and harmonious home environment you will find your spiritual and physical growth is receiving a boost from the calm surroundings you have made in your home.
